Excavating Superintendent — Full Time
Location: Waverly, IA (projects within ~1 hour) | Home every night
Position Overview
SCI Concrete & Excavating is hiring an experienced Excavating Superintendent to lead our excavating operations across site prep, underground utilities, and grading projects. This is a high-responsibility, hands-on leadership role for someone who takes pride in doing quality work, communicating clearly, and keeping crews, schedules, and job sites running efficiently and safely.
Responsibilities
Oversee multiple excavating crews and projects from start to finish (site prep, underground utilities, grading, demo, dirt work)
Plan and coordinate daily/weekly production schedules to keep jobs on track
Lead pre-job planning: crew assignments, equipment needs, traffic control/logistics, and sequencing with other trades
Coordinate materials, equipment, and deliveries (pipe, aggregate, dirt export/import, machines, trucks, etc.)
Ensure quality workmanship, accuracy, and consistent SCI standards on every job
Review plans and specifications; confirm layout, elevations, slopes, and utility locations
Utilize and/or support layout and grade work using GPS and/or Total Station
Communicate with project managers, customers, inspectors, and other trades to solve issues fast
Manage jobsite safety: conduct daily safety checks, enforce policies, and lead by example
Track production and labor hours; help forecast manpower needs and report progress
Identify potential delays or conflicts early and create solutions to keep projects moving
Mentor foremen and crew members; train new team members and hold crews accountable
Maintain jobsite organization and equipment care; ensure proper maintenance checks and reporting
Support scheduling of trucking, hauling, and coordination of underground inspections/as-builts as needed
Requirements
Minimum 5 years of excavating experience (site prep, underground utilities, grading)
Strong leadership with proven ability to manage crews and keep work organized
Solid communication skills and a problem-solving mindset
Ability to read and interpret drawings/plans for layout and execution
Experience with GPS and/or Total Station
Valid driver’s license and ability to perform physical jobsite work
Experience running multiple jobs/crews is a plus
CDL preferred (or ability to obtain one in a timely manner, if you want this included)
